Now they want the police.
(Big League Politics) – Chicago Democrat Congressman Bobby Rush revealed in a Thursday press conference that a detail of Chicago Police assigned to safeguard his office during the city’s recent race riots neglected to deter looters pillaging the mall in which the Democrat’s congressional office is located.
“They even had the unmitigated gall to go and make coffee for themselves and pop some popcorn, my popcorn, in my microwave while looters were tearing apart businesses within their sight, within their reach. And they were in a mood of relaxation, and they did not care about what was happening to the businesspeople in this city,” said Rush, a Chicago Democrat known for defeating Barack Obama in a primary election in his earlier career. “They didn’t care. They absolutely didn’t care.”
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot went on to speak at the press conference, claiming that the police exhibited a “deplorable lack of responsibility to do their job at time when city and fellow officers needed them most.” She claimed that their lack of action “gave the impression that police don’t care if black and brown communities were looted and burned.”
At some point during the night of May 31st, a rioter broke into Rush’s office, remaining in the office for several hours, apparently after the police had left. The looting and rioting in Chicago was among the worst in the country, with 18 murders occurring in the citywide crime spree on that day alone, making it the most violent day in 60 years of Chicago history.
A Chicago alderman exploded at the mayor for the lacking police response to the criminal rampage, cursing out Mayor Lightfoot for refusing to respond to his concerns that riotous looters were set to target residents of his district in their homes.
As it turns out, Chicago’s Democratic leaders are in sore need of a police department that acts decisively to deter and prevent crime.
