‘Not ESG-Friendly’ – 20 Tons Of Water Used To Extinguish Tesla Fire In Taiwan

(Zerohedge) – As part of the great COVID reset, the transformation period has been a massive opportunity for lawmakers and corporations to push electric cars to the masses as they say these vehicles are ‘ESG-Friendly.’

We’ll save the mining part of minerals for electric batteries for an entirely different conversation. Today we want to focus on the amount of fresh water it takes to extinguish a fire in an electric car versus an internal combustion engine.

Last week, in Tainan City, Taiwan, firefighters used about 20 tons of water to extinguish a fire after a Tesla crashed and went up into flames.

Fire Captain Chiu Yuan-ming told Taiwan News that around three tons of water are required to extinguish an internal combustion engine fire. However, he noted, an enormous amount of water is needed to extinguish an electric vehicle fire.

The Tesla in question slammed into a residential building on Wednesday and burst into flames. The driver survived and was rescued before fire consumed the vehicle. There was no word if the Tesla vehicle was on Autopilot during the collision.

It took firefighters at least an hour to extinguish the fire spraying 20 tons of water on the Tesla.

Fire Captain Chiu pointed to research that said upwards of 75 tons of water are required to extinguish a Tesla fire. The reason is that the batteries are compacted with highly combustible lithium metal.

Another fire earlier this month in a Philadelphia suburb had firefighters spray a steady stream of water for more than 90 minutes on a Tesla Plaid that had caught fire under what was called ‘strange circumstances.’

Sales of electric vehicles are soaring worldwide, and firefighters have yet to have adequate training or equipment to put out a lithium battery fire quickly – so they waste 20-75 tons of water for a single-vehicle fire versus a combustion engine that only needs 3 tons.

Wasting tons and tons of water for electric vehicle fires is not ESG-Friendly, especially when parts of the world are experiencing vicious megadroughts.

WATCH: Trump Enters UFC 264 to Chants of “U-S-A!”

(Breitbart) – If it had been a voice vote, it’s clear that President Trump won the crowd at UFC 264 on Saturday night.

A small smattering of boos were quickly and resoundingly drowned out by chants of “USA! USA!” as former President Trump made his entrance to UFC 264 in Las Vegas.

Not only that, Trump got a standing ovation as well:

UFC 264 was headlined by the third fight in the trilogy between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Poirier dominated a fast-paced first round that ended with McGregor immobile in the corner after suffering a broken ankle.

Trump became the first sitting president in history to attend a UFC fight during his term in office. He and UFC President Dana White have maintained a strong friendship that stretches back before Trump was elected in 2016.

After the fight, White explained Trump’s visit as “two friends, who are fight fans, watching a fight.”

Country Music Gone Woke! Star John Rich: ‘Threat of Cancellation’ Silencing Conservative Artists

(Breitbart) – Country music star John Rich of Big & Rich told Breitbart News this weekend that the “very liberal” majority of those in the country music industry have become “emboldened” in recent months to push woke leftist ideology publicly in contravention of the views of the majority of the country music audience. Rich said the mere “threat of cancellation” keeps conservative-leaning artists from speaking out, arguing it is actually a “step deeper than” cancel culture – ultimately creating a divide between the country music industry and the country music audience.

“The industry of country is, I would say, I can’t give you a percentage but let’s just say the majority is very liberal,” Rich said in an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday on SiriusXM 125 the Patriot Channel. “They’ve been that way for a long time. It’s interesting that the industry that puts out country music doesn’t really align with a lot of the audience. A lot of folks that listen to country, and again I can’t give you a percentage but I can tell you a majority of the audience probably leans conservative. So you’ve got this gulf, kind of, between the two. Over the years, the industry has never really come out really strongly about their liberal edge that they’ve got until recently, maybe in the past six to 12 months. They’ve started coming out more and more and the problem you get is if you’ve got artists that are conservative but their record label, their publicist, their manager, a lot of the radio stations are being overseen by liberals. We used to be able to make music and get it played and still say what we wanted to say and still get our music played but that’s not really the case now.”

“A lot of my fans will ask ‘hey John why don’t we see other country artists who we assume are probably conservative, why don’t we see them speaking out?’ The answer is they still want to get their records played and they still want to be invited to the award show and get the big tours and those kinds of things so is it cancel culture? No, because they’re not even stepping forward to be canceled. So it’s actually a step deeper than cancel-it’s the threat of cancellation that keeps them from saying anything in the first place. So I think the country music audience now, any of them that are conservative, are starting to see things in the industry and say ‘hold on a minute, that’s not how I thought it was or what they thought about our country or our culture.’ But now they’re seeing that is how they feel about it so it’s a really interesting gap between who’s promoting the music and who’s listening to the music at this point,” he said.

Asked how conservatives such as him can beat this woke leftist shift in the country music industry, the “Redneck Riviera” trademark owner pointed to Aaron Lewis’s recent patriotic anthem “Am I the Only One” as an example of the gap between the industry and audience. Despite skyrocketing on the charts and streaming platforms, the industry has completely ignored the song, which slams left-wing activists, including those who tore statutes down during the Black Lives Matter riots in 2020.

“Listen, there’s going to be people in the industry and outside it who say ‘oh, he’s just making that up’ or ‘that’s hyperbole what he’s saying, that’s not really what it is and the industry is not doing that,’” Rich said. “But let’s take the song you just talked about, Aaron Lewis’s song. Yes, it is at the top of streaming platforms and sales platforms-sales is the big one, I mean when people vote with their wallets that’s the strongest vote you’re ever going to get in any industry especially in music. They can stream it for free half the time, but if they actually go purchase it well that tells you something. So he’s out there topping all these charts yet the country music industry won’t back him up. Radio won’t play him. So what does that tell you? Does that tell you what I’m telling you right now about how where the industry sits and where a lot of the artists and audience sits are in two different places-is that a correct statement? Yes it is a correct statement. It’s where it is right now. So, people are voting with their dollars and the industry is going ‘we’re still not going to play it.’ So if you want to know why other country singers don’t come out and say what they really think about things-at least the conservative ones-it’s because of that exact scenario you’re watching play out right now with Aaron Lewis’s song.”

Breitbart John Rich – July 10, 2021

When asked what has changed in the last year, Rich said the left has been “bolstered” because “they’ve seen everybody from Donald Trump on down kicked off of social media.”

“They see that the powers that be in tech and in media are on the left , so they’ve got them on their side, so that emboldens them to step forward and go, ‘Well, there’s really nothing anybody can do about it so, we’re just going to step on out here and just do it. We’re just going to make our purpose be the fact and this is going to play out like we want it to play out, and it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks because we’ve got all then power on our side,’” he said.

“And guess what?” Rich asked. “They do have that power on their side.”

But conservatives, he continued, still have their voice, and there is one primary reason they are not using it.

“There’s only one word. Fear. They’re afraid of it. They’re afraid of what might happen to them if they push back or they speak up. And that goes all the way from a multiplatinum artist down to just a regular guy or gal, living in America that wants to keep their job or doesn’t want to get kicked off a platform,” he said before explaining his thinking on the matter in the bigger picture.

“What were the founding fathers worried about when they signed the Declaration of Independence? They were signing their death warrants when they signed the Declaration of Independence. If Britain found those men, they were going to hang them, they were going to burn their property, enslave their families, they would erase them. That’s what they were up against. That’s what they were risking to push back against the tyrannical force like England. And they were willing to do it,” Rich said. “‘Give me liberty or give me death’ was not some bumper sticker. It wasn’t a hashtag. It was the attitude it took to found this country.”

Yet, in 2021, Rich continued, people do not say things over fear of getting kicked off of social media.

“That’s not the level of intensity that got the country founded in the first place,” he said, although he suggested people are starting to realize their freedom of speech is more valuable than someone else’s opinion of them.

He added that the left has been “smart and successful at becoming interwoven,” with all the different platforms interconnected in tech in media.

“So if they want to corral you or a certain group, they can do it. … We do not,” he said. “We don’t have any bases covered at this point. We’re playing catch up and now you’re seeing the results of it.”

However, he said he is seeing things “starting to turn a corner” for conservatives, citing the recent wave of parents getting involved in school board meetings as the left pursues radical agenda items such as Critical Race Theory.

“Everybody’s got to stand up on their own two feet and not be afraid to express their opinions about what they see in the country,” he added.

Breaking: Trump Makes His Move – Big Tech His New Target [Report]

(TreeHouse) – Today President Donald Trump presented an op-ed piece published in the Wall Street Journal explaining why he is suing Big Tech giants Google, Facebook and Twitter. You can find the filings here: YouTube/Google Lawsuit HERE and Facebook Lawsuit HERE

Donald J Trump – “One of the gravest threats to our democracy today is a powerful group of Big Tech corporations that have teamed up with government to censor the free speech of the American people. This is not only wrong-it is unconstitutional. To restore free speech for myself and for every American, I am suing Big Tech to stop it.

Social media has become as central to free speech as town meeting halls, newspapers and television networks were in prior generations. The internet is the new public square. In recent years, however, Big Tech platforms have become increasingly brazen and shameless in censoring and discriminating against ideas, information and people on social media-banning users, deplatforming organizations, and aggressively blocking the free flow of information on which our democracy depends.

No longer are Big Tech giants simply removing specific threats of violence. They are manipulating and controlling the political debate itself. Consider content that was censored in the past year. Big Tech companies banned users from their platforms for publishing evidence that showed the coronavirus emerged from a Chinese lab, which even the corporate media now admits may be true. In the middle of a pandemic, Big Tech censored physicians from discussing potential treatments such as hydroxychloroquine, which studies have now shown does work to relieve symptoms of Covid-19. In the weeks before a presidential election, the platforms banned the New York Post-America’s oldest newspaper-for publishing a story critical of Joe Biden ‘s family, a story the Biden campaign did not even dispute.

Perhaps most egregious, in the weeks after the election, Big Tech blocked the social-media accounts of the sitting president. If they can do it to me, they can do it to you-and believe me, they are.

Jennifer Horton, a Michigan schoolteacher, was banned from Facebook for sharing an article questioning whether mandatory masks for young children are healthy. Later, when her brother went missing, she was unable to use Facebook to get the word out. Colorado physician Kelly Victory was deplatformed by YouTube after she made a video for her church explaining how to hold services safely. Kiyan Michael of Florida and her husband, Bobby, lost their 21-year-old son in a fatal collision caused by a twice-deported illegal alien. Facebook censored them after they posted on border security and immigration enforcement.

Meanwhile, Chinese propagandists and the Iranian dictator spew threats and hateful lies on these platforms with impunity.

This flagrant attack on free speech is doing terrible damage to our country. That is why in conjunction with the America First Policy Institute, I filed class-action lawsuits to force Big Tech to stop censoring the American people. The suits seek damages to deter such behavior in the future and injunctions restoring my accounts.

Our lawsuits argue that Big Tech companies are being used to impose illegal and unconstitutional government censorship. In 1996 Congress sought to promote the growth of the internet by extending liability protections to internet platforms, recognizing that they were exactly that-platforms, not publishers. Unlike publishers, companies such as Facebook and Twitter can’t be held legally liable for the content posted to their sites. Without this immunity, social media companies could not exist.

Democrats in Congress are exploiting this leverage to coerce platforms into censoring their political opponents. In recent years, we have all watched Congress haul Big Tech CEOs before their committees and demand that they censor “false” stories and “disinformation”-labels determined by an army of partisan fact-checkers loyal to the Democrat Party. As the cases of fellow plaintiffs Ms. Horton, Dr. Victory and the Michael family demonstrate, in practice this amounts to suppression of speech that those in power do not like.

Further, Big Tech and government agencies are actively coordinating to remove content from the platforms according to the guidance of agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Big Tech and traditional media entities formed the Trusted News Initiative, which essentially takes instructions from the CDC about what information they need to “combat.” The tech companies are doing the government’s bidding, colluding to censor unapproved ideas.

This coercion and coordination is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has held that Congress can’t use private actors to achieve what the Constitution prohibits it from doing itself. In effect, Big Tech has been illegally deputized as the censorship arm of the U.S. government. This should alarm you no matter your political persuasion. It is unacceptable, unlawful and un-American.

Through these lawsuits, I intend to restore free speech for all Americans-Democrats, Republicans and independents. I will never stop fighting to defend the constitutional rights and sacred liberties of the American people.” ( link )

Just In: Biden Makes the Call – FIRES Top Official

(NOQReport) – President Joe Biden on Friday fired Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul, according to the former commissioner, who said he won’t leave his post and will log into work on Monday morning because his term isn’t over.

Article by Jack Phillips from our partners at The Epoch Times .

Saul was one of the few remaining holdover officials who were appointed by former President Donald Trump . The White House confirmed to Fox News and other news outlets that it terminated Saul’s employment after he refused a request to resign.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Saul said he received an email from the White House Personnel Office on Friday morning about the decision. However, Saul added that he will not leave his post, challenging the legality of the Biden administration’s decision to remove him.

“This was the first I or my deputy knew this was coming,” Saul told the newspaper, referring to the email. “It was a bolt of lightning no one expected. And right now it’s left the agency in complete turmoil.”

Saul’s six-year-long term was slated to expire in January 2025.

“I consider myself the term-protected Commissioner of Social Security,” he said, calling his ouster a “Friday Night Massacre” and an “abuse” of power.

The White House also released a statement on the decision, alleging that Saul-a longtime GOP donor-“politicized” the Social Security Administration (SSA).

“Since taking office, Commissioner Saul has undermined and politicized Social Security disability benefits, terminated the agency’s telework policy that was utilized by up to 25 percent of the agency’s workforce, not repaired SSA’s relationships with relevant Federal employee unions including in the context of COVID-19 workplace safety planning, reduced due process protections for benefits appeals hearings, and taken other actions that run contrary to the mission of the agency and the President’s policy agenda,” the White House said in a statement to Fox News and other news outlets in confirming the decision.

Republican lawmakers criticized the White House’s move to oust him.

“This removal would be an unprecedented and dangerous politicization of the Social Security Administration,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wrote in a tweet.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) noted that Saul was confirmed by a “wide, bipartisan margin” and had several years remaining in his term.

“President Biden is overtly politicizing the SSA,” Grassley said in a statement. “People don’t want their retirement and benefits politicized, they just want an agency that works. We had that under Commissioner Saul.”

But Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), chairman of the House Ways and Means subcommittee overseeing the agency, said his removal was necessary. “They’ve been trying to destroy Social Security,” he wrote on Twitter of his firing.

Reports citing anonymous sources claimed Biden has appointed Kilolo Kijakazi, the deputy commissioner of retirement and disability policy, as the acting Social Security commissioner.

In Many Cities In America, The Criminals Are Starting To Gain Firm Control Of The Streets

(Zerohedge) – Authored by Michael Snyder via TheMostImportantNews.com,

Every week the horrendous crime wave that is sweeping across America seems to get even worse . In some of our largest cities, looting, murder and violence are becoming a way of life, and authorities seem powerless to do anything about it. Is this what we can expect life in the United States to look like moving forward? All over the globe, people are watching us, and they are stunned by what they have been witnessing. Criminals are wildly out of control, and many of our largest cities are being transformed into extremely violent war zones.

For example, just check out what happened in Oakland over the weekend. According to Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, his officers were completely overwhelmed by “the level of violence and gunfire” …

The Fourth of July reeled into “12 hours of non-stop chaos” Sunday night with several victims wounded by celebratory gunfire, a homicide and a massive sideshow marred by gunfire. The night culminated at the sideshow, where more than 200 participants pelted police officers with debris and flashed them with hand-held lasers.

Embattled Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong told reporters that the level of violence and gunfire overwhelmed his officers.

Next door, the shoplifting epidemic in San Francisco has evolved into systematic looting.

Sadly, no retailer is immune. Even though Neiman Marcus has enthusiastically embraced a whole host of “woke” causes, criminals ruthlessly looted one of their stores in San Francisco on Monday …

Looters were captured on video Monday ransacking a Neiman Marcus in San Francisco as thefts continue to plague businesses in the area.

At least nine suspects smashed display cases, snatched handbags, and jetted out of the building before law enforcement arrived to the scene at about 6 p.m., according to footage. The suspects were seen running out of the store with their hands full of merchandise before entering an apparent getaway car that sped off down a busy intersection.

If you have not seen footage of the looters yet, you can watch it right here . This happened in broad daylight, and it is hard to believe that such scenes are actually happening in the United States of America.

At this point, the looting has gotten so bad that some major retailers are taking drastic actions …

Walgreens shuttered 17 of its stores in the San Francisco area in the past five years, and the company said thefts in the area are four times more likely than anywhere else in the country as executives budgeted 35 times more for security personnel to guard the chains.

Target executives in the city also decided to limit business hours in response to an uptick in larceny.

But unless they completely close up shop, the looting is going to continue.

Criminals in California have learned that if they keep the value of the merchandise they steal at each store to under $950, they won’t be charged with a felony even if they are caught.

So now we are witnessing a wave of retail theft that is unlike anything we have ever seen before…

SF Police Lt. Tracy McCray pinned the blame on DA Chesa Boudin (whose parents were part of the radical and violent Weather Underground, and left two police officers dead during a botched heist ). According to McCray, Boudin’s “criminals first agenda” is responsible for the uptick in crime.

“What happened in that Walgreens has been going on in the city for quite a while,” McCray said in June. “I’m used to it. I mean, we could have a greatest hits compilation of people just walking in and cleaning out the store shelves and security guards, the people who work there, just standing by helplessly because they can’t do anything.”

Up in Portland, the street violence just continues to get even worse.

Earlier today, I was saddened to learn that a very generous man that had put up a pop-up swimming pool for the homeless during the heat wave had been viciously stabbed to death …

A man whose ingenious pop-up swimming pool kept the homeless cool during the recent heat wave was fatally stabbed in the same spot just one day later, according to Portland police.

Officers identified Tyson L. Morlock as the man who was found stabbed in the inner eastside Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood at Division Street and Southeast Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard around 3:37 a.m. on Thursday, July 1.

He tried to make Portland a better place, and now he is dead.

Of course so many people are being murdered these days that it is extremely difficult to keep up with all of the carnage.

In Chicago, this holiday weekend was the most violent weekend that we have seen in 2021 so far, and that is really saying something…

Every July 4th weekend police in Chicago brace for an uptick in violence – even more than is usual when typical weekends average about 40 shootings – and this holiday weekend was no different, easily registering as the deadliest and most violent this year given the total death count . New York City has also been witnessing a steady uptick in seemingly random shootings and violence, including brazen acts committed in broad daylight in heavily trafficked areas , such as the recent Times Square wounding of a US Marine.

On Monday the Chicago Sun-Times has tallied 92 people shot over the long July 4th weekend, with 16 killed. The Sun-Times database shows the numbers killed to be a weekend high for all of 2021 so far.

There are certain areas of Chicago that are essentially “no go zones” at this point, but of course the same thing could be said about the worst parts of many other major U.S. cities.

As I discussed the other day , it is being reported that murder rates in our largest cities were up by an average of 30 percent in 2020, and as of a few weeks ago they were up another 24 percent so far in 2021.

Ordinary citizens are begging our leaders to “do something” about this enormous wave of violence, but at this point nothing seems to be working.

If things are this bad now while the U.S. economy is in “recovery mode”, how bad will conditions get when the next severe downturn comes along?

It is heartbreaking to watch our society come apart at the seams all around us, and I have a feeling that what we have witnessed so far is just the beginning.

CNN Medical Analyst: ‘It’s Time to Start Mandating Vaccines’

(Breitbart) – CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner said Thursday on “OutFront” that he thought it was “time to start mandating” people to get the coronavirus vaccine.

Burnett said, “You know, Dr. Reiner, when you look at this in the broader context, there’s still a third of the eligible population in the United States that hasn’t got a single dose. The Biden Administration says it’s not their role to mandate get people vaccinated. Instead, they said this.”

In a clip, President Joe Biden said, “Please get vaccinated now.”

Burnett asked, “Given where things are going, is it time to move on from saying please to mandating?”

Reiner replied, “I do think it’s time to start mandating vaccines. And I think that the private industry and private organizations will do that. At GW university, where I work, starting in fall, you can’t be on campus unless you’re fully vaccinated.”

He added, “We’re at the part of the pandemic now where the problem in this country is that 150 million Americans are not vaccinated. Half of that number is less than 18 years of age. But let’s look at the adults. Seventy-five-million adults have chosen not to get vaccinated. That choice has consequences. Now, we can’t force you to take a jab in the arm. But there are many jobs, perhaps, that can prevent you from working if you decide not to get vaccinated. So I think we need to be more proactive, and we will see industry take the lead in this.”

White House: Hunter Biden ‘Has the Right’ to Sell Artwork to Anonymous Buyers for $500K

(Breitbart) – White House press secretary Jen Psaki stated Friday that Hunter Biden “has the right to pursue an artistic career” by selling “artwork” to an anonymous buyer for as much as $500,000, despite concerns that Hunter Biden is still invested in “CCP [Chinese Communist Party]-linked firms.”

“I can tell you that after careful consideration, a system has been established that allows for Hunter Biden to work in his profession within reasonable safeguards,” Psaki stated. “He has the right to pursue an artistic career just like any child of the president has the right to pursue a career.”

“All interactions regarding the selling of art and the setting of prices will be handled by professional gallerists, adhering to the highest industry standards,” Psaki insisted. “And any offer out of the normal course will be rejected out of hand and the gallerists will not share information about buyers or prospective buyers, including with Hunter Biden or the administration.”

Breitbart News reported that Joe Biden’s “child” is working with Soho art dealer Georges Berg s, who has links to China himself:

Berg s is holding an art exhibition in the fall, where Hunter’s art is expected to sell anywhere from $75,000-$500,000. The entire venture has prompted ethics concerns, particularly given Hunter’s past work as his father served as vice president – striking deals with Chinese officials and raking in tens of thousands of dollars per month serving on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian oligarch-owned oil and gas company, despite having no experience in the energy sector. His father would later brag about threatening to withhold aid from Ukraine unless officials fired the prosecutor conducting a corruption investigation into Burisma.

But instead of making the transactions more transparent and open, the White House is hoping to strike a deal to make buyers of Hunter Biden’s artwork, which is expected to sell for up to half a million dollars, anonymous.

According to a Washington Post article on Thursday, Berg s would set the prices for the artwork and withhold “all records, including potential bidders and final buyers.”

“The owner, Georges Berg s, has also agreed to reject any offer that he deems suspicious or that comes in over the asking price, according to people familiar with the agreement,” the Post explained.

Breitbart News senior contributor and Profiles in Corruption author Peter Schweizer designated the proposal as an utterly “absurd” solution.

“The only way to address these issues is with greater transparency-not less,” he told Breitbart News. “Their proposed solution is greater secrecy, not transparency. And they are essentially saying ‘Trust Us.’ Joe and Hunter Biden’s track record on such matters gives us no reason to trust them.”

Breitbart News also reported that Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) declared there are some “tough” ethical questions concerning Hunter Biden, who is “still investing in CCP [Chinese Communist Party]-linked firms,” as he is expected to sell his artwork for up to half a million dollars to “anonymous” buyers.

“Some very tough ethical questions about whether the president’s son, who is still investing in CCP-linked firms, should take $500,000 in payment (bribes) for his ‘artwork,’” Cotton tweeted.

Though Joe Biden has stayed quiet during his son’s new scandalous venture, Hunter told Artnet, “My dad loves everything that I do, and so I’ll leave it at that.”

Meanwhile, money laundering has been identified as an issue in the art world, the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations reported last year.

“Secrecy, anonymity, and a lack of regulation create an environment ripe for laundering money and evading sanctions,” the committee explained. “Given the intrinsic secrecy of the art industry, it is clear that change is needed in this multi-billion dollar industry.”

Will The Pandemic PTSD Ever End: Maui’s Mayor Asks For ‘Fewer Tourists’ As Tourists Arrive En Masse

(Zerohedge) – Proving that the PTSD from the pandemic is going to offer up likely several decades more of total fear porn, Maui’s mayor is pleading to airlines: ‘Please don’t bring so many people to our island.’

For a year, Hawaii, which derives much of its revenue from tourism, was shut down to everyone but locals. Now, it seems the once-prominent issue of ‘over-tourism’, often cited by locals as a complaint of living on the island, is back in full force. Except this time, when the tourists showed back up, the island is scurrying to make up a shortage of hospitality workers, U.S. News and World Report said. The islands restaurants are struggling to keep up, the report says.

Mayor Michael Victorino recently said: “We don’t have the authority to say stop, but we are asking the powers to be to help us.”

Victorino has blamed the airport: “It’s the airlift that really drives all of this. Without airlift, people don’t come.”

Hawaiian Airlines spokesman Alex Da Silva responded by saying that while the company is conscious of the regulations and requests, it is visitors that drive the state’s economy.

The island still has ‘some of the nation’s most stringent coronavirus public health restrictions’, according to the report. It is also the only state that hasn’t fully reopened, mostly due to its remote location and limited hospital capacity. The islanders also have on their mind ‘the memory of diseases that wiped out 80% of the Native Hawaiian population in the century after Europeans arrived’, U.S. News and World Report writes.

The state’s governor doesn’t plan on lifting all restrictions until 70% of the state is vaccinated. As of right now, 58% of the state was vaccinated.

The state has become a destination, meanwhile, as travel restrictions from other states start to loosen. It’s also a great destination for those that are looking to fly overseas, but can’t yet due to Covid restrictions.

215,148 visitors came to the island in May compared to just 1,054 during the same month last year, the report notes. That number stood at 251,665 in May of 2019. Travelers still must quarantine upon their arrival.

Jack Starr, who manages Kimo’s in Lahaina, said: “We’re under more pressure than we’ve been in pre-COVID, that’s for damn sure.” Restaurants have still been operating at 50% capacity and will be allowed to fill 75% of their seats later this week. Starr says that the distancing requirements and employee shortage are making life difficult for restaurant owners.

“Are you kidding me? You got to take that down to 3 feet, and we might have something going here,” he told U.S. News.

What If An Alien Probe Visited Earth?

(Zerohedge) – Authored by Ross Pomeroy via RealClearScioence.com,

Popular media portrayals of extraterrestrials visiting Earth have tended to display the dramatic: giant spaceraft, killer robots, and nefarious aliens. A more realistic scenario is decidedly more mundane, but still undeniably world-shattering: a single, robotic probe, visiting Earth in orbit or landing as a rover.

Back in 1998, Allen Tough, a Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and an expert in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) before his death in 2012, postulated that there might be alien civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy with the ability to send out hundreds of small, intelligent probes to explore space. His supposition was reasonable. Today, well-funded collaborations like Breakthrough Starshot here on Earth are now actively working toward such an endeavor.

So what if Tough was right, and tens, hundreds, or even thousands of years ago, a far-off alien civilization dispatched dozens of robotic scouts out into the cosmos and one such rover eventually cruised its way to Earth?

What should be humanity’s response?

The first step, according to Tough, would be to confirm that the craft really isn’t from Earth, perhaps from a secretive government. A smart, skeptical team, ideally composed of scientists from various countries, would need to be recruited to examine the probe. If it’s on land, the rover should probably be quarantined at the area it touched down. If it’s in space, a robotic or a crewed mission would undoubtedly be required for an up-close look.

Once the probe’s authenticity is confirmed, Tough stresses that the finding should be made public worldwide, with all collected data openly shared.

What to do next depends upon the nature of the probe.

According to SETI Senior Astronomer Seth Shostak , we’d want to find out if it’s broadcasting any radio signals out into space, and probably block them at least temporarily. Such signals, especially if they are unidirectional, would likely be attempts to communicate with the aliens who sent it. We might not want the probe revealing too much about humanity before we can ascertain its intent.

If the probe’s intent is judged to be benign, or even friendly, we’d next want to try to communicate with it . If it’s plainly unintelligent, this could take some time. After unblocking its communications, we’d likely have Earth representatives attempt to share basic information, something like mathematical principles, gestures of friendship, or music. We’d then have to wait for the probe’s handlers to respond through it. If the craft traveled for a long time, this could take hundreds of years! Shostak isn’t sure humans would be able to wait that long – the desire to disassemble the probe and learn from it’s technological guts might be too great.

But how would extraterrestrials feel if we took apart their probe? Shostak doesn’t think aliens would be too mad. After all, if genial Martians suddenly appeared and messed with Curiosity, NASA engineers would be ecstatic – nothing would increase the space agency’s budget more.

It would be more interesting if the probe or rover was artificially intelligent, thus capable of communicating with humans directly. Tough believed that any alien probe sent expressly for long-distance exploration would likely be capable of learning from, and even communicating with, a race it encountered.

‘The probe has presumably already monitored our radio and television broadcasts, learned at least one of our languages, and learned about our culture and history,’ he wrote.

That certainly would be convenient and fascinating! While it’s hard to hypothesize on what exactly an intelligent alien probe might tell us, Tough has a good idea about how we should act around it: show respect, avoid violence, speak and act truthfully, and deal with it fairly and honestly.

He also thought that any communication should be attempted with international scientific cooperation as well as openness to the public, aspirations perhaps as unlikely as an alien probe visiting Earth in the first place!
